Monday, August 2, 2010 at 11:20AM Your daily (Mon-Fri) roundup of links from around the blogosphere, typically Trail Blazers related.
• Did you catch Portland Roundball Society’s coverage of the “Shake it till we Make it” gala?
• ESPN INsider Chad Ford is compiling this year’s Future Power Rankings. Poor Charlotte Bobcat fans (all seven of them). It’s a shame to be in such a basketball area and to be consistently denied a winning product at the professional level. On the bright side, things can change quickly in this league.
• Jason Quick of The Oregonian takes a look into Blazer GM Rich Cho’s decision making process Research. Options. Input. Say it with me! Research. Options. Input. This is exactly the type of mindset to look for in a General Managed, a CEO, a President, or anybody who’s decisions impact a lot of people. Sometimes there is an idealization of the “gunslinger mentality” where leaders make decisions off the cuff, shooting from the hip, relying solely on their “gut.” I don’t know about you, but if my interests are at stake, I’d like a process in place to help protect them.
• Ben Golliver at BlazersEdge has your Full Court Press.
• Over at Beyond The Beat, Travis Margoni covers the coming Nike Global Challenge. Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I love getting to see these young players in a setting like this. I love watching these players start to show flashes of potential, I love trying to figure out if they have what it takes to make it to the NBA. At this stage in their careers, everything is still in flux. A broken ankle, an ill-advised bag of weed, a difficulty adjusting to the NCAA level, any of a myriad of things could easily derail what looks to be a promising NBA future. However, to watch these kids grow up and make it, knowing that they were both good and lucky, is a joy.
If you’ve been reading this site since late June, you know I’m in the driver’s seat on the Austin Rivers bandwagon. Hopefully, you guys will make the trip out to Hillsboro and see these future NBA prospects for yourself.
• Speaking of things that can derail an NBA career, Tyreke Evans has got to make better choices. Blazer fans know what it was like to dread the next player making the police blotter, and the Portland faithful know exactly how blessed they are to have Brandon Roy—who’s most controversial moment to date consisted of taking a private moment during the National Anthem—as our franchise player. Silly cell phone pictures notwithstanding, the Trail Blazers have done an excellent job of assembling high-character players.
• Over at Pro Basketball Talk Kurt Helin discusses incorporating elements of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement into the NBA’s 2011 version.
• At Wages of Wins, Burzin Daruwala takes a look at Portland through the lens of Berri’s metric. I am sure that all of you know that I am of the disposition that single-number-metrics are useful, but by no means are they “argument enders.” Instead, single number metrics that attempt to encapsulate a player’s contributions are ammunition for the argument, tools to help point out what a player brings to the table in a broad and generalized way. And while Jeff Pendergraph’s agent is surely a WP48 fan right about now, it’s not the first metric I would use to gage success in the playoffs. Remember that WP48 is a box score based metric, and in the words of Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey;”Someone created the box score and he should be shot.”

Research Options Input = ROI = Return On Investment. Hmmm.
Nathan, you are absolutely right in pointing out that a single metric that claims to measure all the attributes of a player is simply not possible today because of the statistics we gather currently and the many we leave out. That being said, we have to start somewhere with the stats that are available to us, and WP48 is an excellent measure to capture available metrics in a meaningful way (i.e. not just look at points scored). To me the greatest thing about the "Wages of Wins" metric is that it has high correlation with team wins and is a good indicator of the likely output of a given player at a given position. Unfortunately it does not capture other attributes, like defense (only steals and turnovers are used), or the pass that led to an assist, or the ability to deny a drive, and so on. For these, currently not measured attributes, we need the famous Pritchard eyes, ears and stats approach, but I'd argue that based on stats tracked currently (i.e. the box score), the "Wages of Wins" approach is the best method to derive meaningful comparisons.
Thanks for linking up to my Beyond the Beat piece, Nathan. You going to the Global Challenge? Should be great--I'm with you on that. Hope to see you there.

Notice that the Chinese know how to do a stimulus package, while no one in power seems to know how to do a stimulus package here in the US.
