ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

Pick and Scroll: Atlanta Should Listen to Kenny Rogers Edition.

Your daily (Mon-Fri) roundup of links from around the blogosphere, typically Trail Blazers related.

• The Oregonian’s Jason Quick reports the Blazers actively pursuing trades, tentatively pursuing free agents. Which is a good strategy, because the Blazers have more leverage to get a better player through trades than they do through free agency. Especially at this particular point in free agency, where teams are flush with money just burning a hole in their collective pocket (just ask Amir Johnson’s accountant about this). The cap friendly contracts of Andre Miller and Joel Przybilla, along with affordable talent like Rudy Fernandez and others, make the Blazers strong trading partners, whereas plenty of teams only have the Mid Level Exception or better to offer a free agent. Right now, going after a free agent would mean overpaying, so it makes sense for the Blazers to only make contact with some lower tier guys at this stage and see what shakes out. Eventually, with teams spending $30 million on Channing Frye, the money is going to dry up and Portland will be free to pick up the best of the rest at a bargain price. Then again, what if Portland is left empty-handed? I’d say that in this free agency climate, it’s ok to not overpay for middling talent.

• From the end of the afore-linked Jason Quick article comes news that Portland is looking at Louis Amundson and Chris Quinn. SJ from Rip City Project weighs in on the free agency process as a whole, and Amundson in particular.

• “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” John Hollinger thinks that Atlanta’s resigning of Joe Johnson is a Pyrrhic victory. I agree. I am of the opinion that Atlanta should have either let Johnson walk, or signed and traded him to a team for a few assets and a trade exception, then Atlanta could move forward, building around an athletic front court by picking up some shooters and a better point guard to replace Bibby. As it stands, the Hawks are darkhorse contenders in the East at best and have little to no shot of overcoming whatever powerhouse arises to take the West. Moving forward, the Hawks look to have little financial flexibility, little chance of contending, and little hope for anything other than mediocrity.

• As an example of team taking an alternative path, Sebastian Pruiti over at TrueHoop Network sister site NBA Playbook breaks down how the Suns will use Hakim Warrick to replace much of Amar’e Stoudemire’s production at a fraction of the cost. Now, the Suns had a much more difficult decision since they had just recently made the Western Conference Finals. However, Amar’e’s eyes and knees are not great investments over time and the Suns will likely be best served over time by building around Goran Dragic and Robin Lopez. I’m not a huge fan of the Warrick and Frye signings, because I’m of the opinion that the Suns should blow it up, move Steve Nash to New York, and work on a youth movement. The Suns aren’t contenders without Stoudemire, so why pay the rest of the team like they are?

• Johnathan Givony of Draft Express gives his rundown of the top American prospects at the FIBA U18 Championships.

• Orlando Summer League starts today, and Las Vegas Summer League starts soon after. Over at the TrueHoop Motherblog, Henry Abbott tells us why summer league is important.

• Over at Basketball Prospectus, Kevin Pelton surveys the Free Agency landscape.

Engineers are a special breed who think with a differnent line of logic than most "normal" people. Since I am one, hollister online I kind of have strong opinions that engineers shouldn't manage much unless they ahve actual extroverted personalities. think people must first research before writing.
