ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

Pick and Scroll: Drama!

Your daily (Mon-Fri) roundup of links from around the blogosphere, typically Trail Blazers related.

• Coup from Rip City Project is headed to South Beach to cover The Great Triumvirate. We at Portland Roundball Society wish nothing but the best for Coup and hope he doesn’t get drenched in locker room champagne too often.

• Buck Williams is BACK! Now I can finally get my Dairy Queen Rip City glass autographed!

• Over at Portland Mercury, PRS’s own Ezra Ace Caraeff is handicapping the odds on the drama Jason Quick predicted. Just a thought here, if Ezra is right and Rudy refuses to report to training camp, there may indeed be some major drama. The Offseason of our Discontent rolls on.

• Speaking of drama, those guys over at TNT? They know it. Casey Holdahl has video evidence of Kevin Pritchard’s cameo appearance on the TNT show Leverage as a used car salesman. I think that Pritchard may be the first actor to be typecast before having even been in a movie. Here is a still shot.

• Is the public perception of Brandon Roy changing? Dave Deckard at BlazersEdge thinks so.

• Dwight Jaynes is an Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inductee. via BlazersEdge

• How does Louis Amundson not have a job yet? I’d be in favor of bringing him to training camp.

• Speaking of hustle power forwards, WallaceNBAHeat tweets that internet superhero Shavlik Randolph is back with the Heat.

• Mike Barrett is serving up some courtside. He’ll be filling in for John Canzano on the Bald Faced Truth for the next three days as well.

• Over at The Oregonian Mike Tokito has you NBA high 5. I hear Rudy is still whining and Chris Paul is still flirting with the league at large. Who can’t wait for the season to start? *points at self* This guy.

• Yao Ming may retire if his foot doesn’t heal right. Ooofff, that’s the sound of millions of Rockets fans in the US and China taking a collective punch to the gut. When healthy, Yao Ming is a nigh-unto unstoppable force and the very best center in the league. When healthy, it’s “Dwight who? Oh, the guy from the dunk contest?” However, health is a fragile thing, some people are able to maintain it better than others. That a 7’6” body of his bulk has survived as well as it has after all the running and pounding and banging is a minor miracle. It will be a sad day if Yao goes out like this. Yao is good for the game, he’s a great role model for young big men who want to develop touch and footwork, he’s a great ambassador for the sport of basketball internationally, and he’s genuinely a good man. Get well soon Yao.

Remember during summer league how Shav was the only guy on the Heat with NBA experience, and that he had 5 years of it? When I saw that (coupled with knowing that the Heat need veteran minimum guys) I became excited for Shav's chances of sticking around. In the game I watched he was the focus of the offense, which seemed to confuse everybody including Shav. Then he hit is face or something and started bleeding and went into the locker room never to be seen again. He needs some luck in his career and I hope he finds it in Miami.

I love Yao. On various NBA video games he has won multiple MVPs under my guidance. Its my therapy for not getting to see him actually play basketball while reasonably healthy.

Please heal, foot of Yao. Please stop grinding this man into the ground, country of Yao. Please lower the price for your products, video game industry.

I can't believe Leverage is actually a show. WHO IS ACTUALLY WATCHING ALL OF THESE TOP RATED BASIC CABLE DRAMAS THAT SEEM LIKE THEY'VE BEEN ON FOR 20 YEARS BUT NOBODY I KNOW OF HAS SEEN. I look forward to KP receiving a speaking part on Burn Notice next.

Amundson for Rudy in a sign and trade? And ouch, I like Leverage and Burn Notice.

Sir, I do not believe that you have ever seen Leverage or Burn Notice. Or White Collar or The Closer or The Cleaner or any of those shows that they promote before the previews come on at the movie theater. LIES.

July 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSethJohnston

The last three I have not seen ( as I am a true hypocrite I believe that those other shows could not possibly be good even though they are probably written/produced by the same people). Leverage and Burn Notice are not life changing, but they are ok. Unfortunately, my wife is a sucker for shows like that so my poor DVR gets fiiled with them.

July 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAl

Oh sure, blame it on your wife because she doesn't hang out in the Pick and Scroll comments and can't defend herself.

She also broke the coffee pot and forgot to take out the garbage.

Firefly FTW. /endthread.

Coming soon on HBO, A Game of Thrones... it's about to get awesome!

Rudy threatening to not come to camp, dramatic? Meh.

For one thing, threats to not come to training camp have little impact when issued in July. If camp opens and he's not there, that's one thing--but "holding out" in the summer is weak.

For another...were he to hold out, I think that Rich Cho's reaction would be--"OK, you're suspended then. Let me know when you're ready to report! ¡Buenos dias!"

But then again, when you're trolling for hits, you gotta be, you know, dramatic.

Quick drama!

When is no news the news? After I heard Jason Quick's 24 to 48 hour, “report,” I began reflecting on what it really should mean to local sports fans. I considered the possibility that this was some kind of double dipping scheme where the reporter gets to report on a non-event more than once. It's, like reporting an event without actually reporting it, so that you can come back later and actually report it or deny it if necessary.

Talk about drama. We have a 24-hour to 48-hour delay before the punch line. Somehow this just does not seem fair to me. Something should be reported or not reported -- it shouldn't be half reported, saying, “I'll talk to you later, when I am actually able to verify the story.” Quick has given us no guarantees here. This could end up as another case of our being teased and tempted right into a dead-end. Meanwhile, we all wait with bated breath.

I also think that it is pathetic how excited people in Portland get over Leverage being filmed there. Seriously. If you don't want to be treated like a small town stop acting like a small town.

The best part of this post is that I can leave my radio tuned to 95.5 when I leave work instead of changing over to cd for the next 3 days.

p.s. Seth, I do not like Entourage.

Quick Drama part two:

Wow! Talk about non-news! Rudy wants to be traded? How surprising! The Blazers are talking about trading Rudy? Revolutionary!

It's not the news or lack of it that served as the drama in this instance, it was the method that our “reporter” chose to stoop to in order to get attention that was the real story. To me he should be embarrassed -- and that's about the extent of what needed to be made known in this situation.
