ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

Pick and Scroll: Split Queens Edition

Your daily (Mon-Fri) roundup of links from around the blogosphere, typically Trail Blazers related.

• The Blazers have signed Wesley Matthews, we can all breathe a sigh of relief, because as you know, the last undrafted rookie that the Jazz took a chance on and Portland signed to an offer sheet was Troy Hudson…

• Over at BlazersEdge, Ben Golliver got Director of College Scouting for the Portland Trail Blazers, Chad Buchanan’s take on Dante Cunningham, Patty Mills, Armon Johnson, Luke Babbitt, Jeff Pendergraph, and more.

• Wendell Maxey is waiting for new Portland GM Rich Cho’s first move, and says it could be a move that would have been too painful for Pritchard to make. As I told you yesterday, I’m reading The House Advantage by Jeff Ma, a consultant for the Portland Trail Blazers and a blackjack legend. In the book, Ma has a chapter on “the religion of statistics.” That’s not a pejorative by the way, it’s a description of the fact that you’ve got to have faith in your system and in making the right bet even when things aren’t going your way or it looks counterintuitive. Was Kevin Pritchard reluctant to “split Queens” as it were? Is Cho the guy that can make the painful move and live with the consequences? We shall see.

As a caveat, basketball has exponentially more variables that cannot be controlled for than blackjack does. Basketball isn’t “pure” from a statistical standpoint; it’s much more like a social science where the confidence levels in a study will never approach that of the hard sciences like physics or chemistry. We can’t control what a player ate that day, if he just broke up with his girlfriend and he’s having trouble focusing, or if his index finger is sore. We can’t control for a player being super-confident that day or feeling unmotivated. So in basketball, the right and wrong bets may be more ambiguous than in blackjack. However, even if a metric is able to predict a phenomenon just barely over 50% of the time, if it can out-perform a coin flip, it is useful.

• With the aforementioned caveat in mind, Neil Paine over at the Basketball-Reference blog brings attention to an interesting study on team chemistry.

• Over at the TrueHoop Motherblog, Henry Abbott asks if Team USA are really the underdogs going into the World Championship Tournament in Turkey.

• In light of the looming CBA struggle Elrod Enchilada at Real GM proposes an arrangement called a Modified full Garvey which I thought was a gold-medal winning high dive technique.

• Jason Quick confirms the rumor first floated on 95.5 Buck Williams is being considered for Nate McMillan’s coaching staff. My inner child is delighted.

John Hollinger tosses some water on the flames of the CP3 to Portland rumors. “Blazer fans, stop asking me about CP3. Not happening for at least a year, if ever.”

Troy Hudson never played for Portland.

@NJ
That's exactly right. They held the press conference and everything, but he played for the Timberwolves. Thus why it's notable.

Not to read to much into the Wendell Maxey article, but is it possible that KP was fired because he would not make the painful trade?

July 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAl

It's possible, but we've really got no idea.

Notice that the Chinese know how to do a stimulus package, while no one in power seems to know how to do a stimulus package here in the US.

Having said that Office 2007, but the anti-money laundering Microsoft Office 2010 is not so easy to write Microsoft Office 2007 the VBA is Office 2010 not with the British. There are many new object type couple, including the field's calendar Adobe reader, by definition, Microsoft Project Professional 2010 the drop-down Microsoft Office calendar option - Choose a travel site Acrobat 9 a departure date. There is also useful to split a form which allows you Microsoft Project 2010 to display on the screen half and the Microsoft Office 2010 Professional specific details of the record Office 2007 Professional, the other half of the list of records Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Student. Outlook is a place, but also the need for such Office 2007 Ultimate type of screen to set a good Project 2010 example. Access 2007, Adobe Acrobat seems to have re-users Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student in the more intensive as the goal, but it is still Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Business with SharePoint Services and Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional SharePoint Server integration.
