ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

Pick and Scroll: Vegas Edition

Your daily (Mon-Fri) roundup of links from around the blogosphere, typically Trail Blazers related.

• Mike Barrett likes what he’s seen from the rookies so far. By the way, Armon Johnson did some things on the court, but what impressed me the most is athletically he seemed like he was using cheat codes. Johnson is an NBA athlete for sure, here’s hoping he’s an NBA player. If he is, his nickname will be “Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right BA.”

• The Blazers won a Summer League game! But what does that matter when balanced against trying to get a look at a player’s development? Casey Holdahl examines the balance between winning and finding winners in Las Vegas.

• Over at the TrueHoop Motherblog, Kevin Arnovitz lists the interesting performances yesterday in Las Vegas.  Patty Mills and Luke Babbitt make the list.

• Over at TrueHoop Network sister site NBA Playbook, Sebastian Pruiti has an ongoing series called “Unsigned Hype” covering the players trying to fight their way into the league. You never know when you might find a Wesley Matthews type player that just needs a chance.

• Joe Freeman of The Oregonian gets Nate McMillan’s take on possible Blazer Wesley Matthews:

“He’ll be a wing defender,” McMillan said. “A guy who can play the two and the three. I looked at some tape of him in the playoffs. He had the assignment of guarding Carmelo and Kobe. You don’t stop those guys, but I think that says a lot about him when Coach Sloan feels … that he’s strong enough to take that challenge.”

• The blogfather, Henry Abbott, takes a  look at the silver lining behind the Lebron James frenzy. Is it the revitalized career of Jim Gray? No? Okay.

• Over at Alone in the Corner (which, only enough, is an NBA statistical analysis site and not an Emo band from 2002) Haralabos Voulgaris discusses whether a team like the Heat actually needs a point guard.

• Over at Bust a Bucket, Seth Johnston examines the Wesley Matthews offer.

• I’d like to take this moment to announce that I have decided to take the next step in my journey as contributor to the TrueHoop Network. If you visit The Motherblog and look at the right hand side of the page, you will see a collection of some of the finest minds in basketball journalism. You will see “quants” like John Hollinger, draft gurus like Chad Ford, and incredible writers like our dear leaders Henry Abbott and Kevin Arnovitz. However, what you will not find much of is hair. Now, since we all know correlation is pretty much the same as causation (right? RIGHT?), I have taken it upon myself to shave my head. Hopefully, now that the hair has been evicted, basketball wisdom will have a direct line of sight to my bald pate (note: Ezra Ace tells me that science doesn’t work this way, I don’t believe him). I am, however, keeping my moderately epic beard to give myself an air of gravitas and to stave off the chemotherapy look.

Nathan, I followed your link to bust a bucket--and I have to call you out for lifting the "emo band" riff from Seth Johnson.

And, I think Alone In The Corner, sounds more Nu Metal anyway, it's not nearly ironic enough for an emo band--well, maybe from 2002.

Did I? Damn. I thought that was original. Totally unintentional.

Who is this Seth Johnson and why does he keep stealing from me? I'm also tired of getting his junk mail.
