ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

It's Official: Two More Years of Camby

Somewhere Joel Przybilla cries a single tear…

The Portland Trail Blazers have signed forward/center Marcus Camby to a two-year contract extension, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Camby posted averages of 7.0 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.13 steals, 2.04 blocked shots and 31.2 minutes in 23 games (all starts) with the Trail Blazers this season. He ranked second in the NBA in rebounds (11.8), fifth in blocked shots (1.97) and eighth in steals-to-turnover ratio (1.04) for 2009-10.

“Portland felt right to me since I got here and the support from the team, fans and organization has been incredible,” said Camby. “I’m looking forward to continuing my career as a Trail Blazer and think this team can do something special.”

The 6-11, 235-pound NBA veteran was acquired from the L.A. Clippers on Feb. 16 in exchange for Travis Outlaw, Steve Blake and cash considerations.
Word around the watercooler, and on Jason Quick’s twitter, is that the deal is for two years, $21 million guaranteed plus $5 million in incentives. First purchase: dunk lessons!

Y'know, this is gonna be interesting. So, assuming Oden comes back for more than 20 games. Who starts? Oden? Which means we're paying $11 Million for a backup center? Or is Camby gonna start, which pretty much means Portland management has finally realized Greg is never gonna be able to play starter minutes because he is foul prone. Meanwhil,e poor Joel, odd man out....

Now the pressure is off Oden to perform right away. He can take 2 years to refine his game, and not be pressed into being the savior at the 5. Camby can also shift over to the 4 and give quality minutes there, as a proven consistant back up power forward (not a tweener like Dante) has yet to appear on the roster. As long as Camby is cool with 30 minutes a night, this is fabulous.

Oden has played well when his job was on the line (think back to the start of last season), and the combo of him and Camby is a nice balance. Przybilla, well, the assumption is that he won't be ready to play come camp, plus his expiring deal will come in handy come trade deadline. He might be the new Raef LaFrentz for this team.

Camby will prove to be a great mentor for young Greg. Joel was competing with Oden and didn't have the experience or bbiq of camby. Like ezera said the expiring contract will be trade bait next season. Good signing. I'm glad this got done.
