ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

The Many Looks of AK-47

Andrei Kirilenko, the Utah Jazz small forward, is not afraid to change it up. While he’s only played for one NBA team in his ten years, Kirilenko has sported a number of different hairdos. Known as AK-47 (initials + number = fun Russian pun), Kirilenko seems to get more outlandish with each passing year. Here are a few of the highlights.

The Ivan Drago - This is a natural look for Kirilenko, as he and Drago are both big Russians looking to intimidate. AK-47 wore this buzzy comrade cut for a long time until slowly becoming westernized.

The early 90s Kevin BaconThe Kevin Bacon is Kirilenko’s latest addition to the repertoire. I hate to be critical of another man’s hair but this is not a good look. Even Jazz fans are having a hard time defending this one. If Kevin Bacon couldn’t pull it off in Tremors in 1990, the odds are against AK-47 in 2010.

The Justin Beiber – Not one to miss out on a fad, Kirilenko ran to his overworked stylist as soon as the teen sensation started to flood the airwaves. AK-47 quickly changed his do though, as he didn’t want to be called out by the 15 year singer in one of his songs, like Tom Brady.

The Punkupine – Part punk, part porcupine, Kirilenko gets all British on us. This look doesn’t last long however, as the NBA orders AK-47 to change his hair after a game with the Nuggets in which Carmelo Anthony had to have 11 quills surgically removed from his face.

The Gary Busey - This haircut says “I just lost my job, drank a fifth of whiskey, took four percocet and adopted three cats. And I don’t give a damn.” I can respect that.

Regarding his hair, Kirilenko once told The USA Today “Sometimes it’s conservative, sometimes it’s crazy Mohawk. I’m just trying to bring a new energy to the game because basketball becomes so routine. If we are role models for young kids, it’s better to mess with your hair than tattoos, piercing, smoking or drinking. Young kids want to prove their independence. I’m here to show them it’s better to mess with your hair than anything else.”

I wonder which look AK-47 will be sporting at the Rose Garden tonight. Sources say it’s the Kevin Bacon.

I had been thinking of his 'Kevin Bacon' as more of a European / Dirk kind of thing. I thought it was alright really, but now that you point out the similarities to Bacon........ ouch. Who'd have thought that I'd learn to dislike bacon ?

I guess I'll hope for a return to the Busy or procupine. He often had a pho-hawk and other variations that were interesting too.

Then again, if he keeps making his 3s, maybe he should keep the new look. I bet he keeps it till he hits a slump.
