ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Because the world really needed another blog dedicated to the Portland Trail Blazers. We're a group of journalists and fans who've grown up with--or have grown to love--Oregon's only professional franchise (and this won't change when MLS comes to town). Plus we're convinced that--if given the chance--we could totally hit the Toyota halfcourt shot. Until then, we're stuck here in the Portland Roundball Society.

Jason Quick: No Surgery, Little Hope for Roy's Knee

Quick reports in the Oregonian:

There’s no meniscus left to operate on in Roy’s left knee.

“Nah. None. Not in my right, either,” Roy said Friday.

The reason Roy’s knee has been swelling up regularly, to the point where it has already been drained twice by Blazers’ doctor Don Roberts this season, is because there is no cartilage to absorb the pounding associated with running and jumping.

“The problem is bone-on-bone there,” Roy said. “Dr. Roberts calls it ‘arthritic knee.’ It’s just something I’m going to have to deal with for the rest of my career.”

"bone-on-bone". Ha.

I just don't understand how this is news. Because Brandon fully tore both of his meniscus, and the standard procedure for a fully torn meniscus is to remove it. This was talked about last year at the end of the season. So the fact that he doesn't have them shouldn't be at all the surprising. The only news is that he is not having microfracture surgery, which is a positive. Leave it to Jason Quick to spin it into story that forecasts doom. I am really getting tired of it. Just like the article last week saying "Roy's knee issues could hobble the Trail Blazer's future." He's completely blowing up situations. Ridiculous.

I'm no medical expert here, but "the standard procedure for a fully torn meniscus is to remove it" sounds totally incorrect.

If this is true, than Portland signed a player without one fully functional knee to a max contract. That would be, how shall I say it, STUPIDO.

man!!! i hate to say it but that is doom for the blazers. damn it damn it damn it. Did they not think about Roys injury situation when we maxed that fn contract. Ive got no bones with Roy he is legit and all that but holy shit our whole organization pegged him as the savior?

Hopefully Armon Johnson is the next steve nash and Oden the next Shaq, and LA the next Garnett otherwise what are we to do? i can't imagine we can trade Roy with that hefty contract

Roy has officially turned into (post 2008) Tracy McGrady. This is a devastating blow to our franchise.

Bassball is full of shit:

He may be T-mac--not a bad comparison. But probably practically he's going to be Yao: limited in games and minutes, FOR THE REST OF HIS CAREER.

You can bet this: the contract he just signed will be the last with the Blazers.

By the way, I recommend the editors put a bubble caption above Roy's image on the homepage that reads: "BONE ON BONE HURTS."

Only partially full of shit. http://www.recoverypt.com/blog/physical-therapy-advice/brandon-roys-meniscus-woes-different-types-of-meniscus-tears-their-treatment/ The part of his meniscus that was torn last year was removed, but the entire meniscus wasn't fully removed. I was mistaken, I admit I was wrong. But it's still confusing that they could just disappear without being removed from surgery. Can't find any cases on line of something like that happening.
